Assignment Overview
For this activity, you will research a Canadian scientist who has made a contribution to atomic and/or molecular theory. You connect this Canadian scientist’s contribution to what they have learned regarding atomic and molecular structure. In this assignment, you will use your webcam or external camera to record yourself as you present your research on your chosen Canadian scientist. Your recorded response should be approximately 2 minutes long. Assessment will occur formatively through the use of a rubric.
For this activity your task is to research a Canadian scientist who has made a contribution to atomic and/or molecular theory and then present your findings in a maximum 2 minute oral presentation.
Step 1: Select your Scientist
- Some suggestions of scientists include:
- the work of Richard F.W. Bader of McMaster University on electronic density in small molecules
- the work of Robert J. LeRoy of the University of Waterloo on the mathematical technique to determine the atomic radius of molecules known as the LeRoy Radius
- the work of Ronald J. Gillespie of McMaster University on the VSEPR model
- the work of Harriet Brooks on nuclear transmutations and radioactivity
Step 2: Research your Scientist
- Locate 1-2 reliable sources that discuss your scientist. Record your sources and the information you need to cite your sources correctly.
- Research your scientist. In your short presentation, you must:
- Briefly describe their life (birth, death, where they lived, family, etc.)
- Briefly summarize the research they are known for. Focus on their major contributions to atomic and/or molecular theory.
- Outline the significance/relevance of their work to the development of atomic and molecular theory. What impact did it have?
- Connect their major contributions to the atomic and molecular theory concepts you have learned in class.
Step 3: Present your Research
- Review your research notes.
- Prepare your answer. Create rough notes, but do not create a script.
- Organize your ideas into a logical order to provide a 2 minute oral presentation on the contributions of your scientist to atomic and molecular theory. Be sure to include all of the items you were asked to research.
- Record your presentation. Do not exceed 2 minutes.
Follow the instructions below to record and submit your video:
If your face and shoulders are not visible in the video, then the assignment will be given a zero.
