Description

Learning Goals:

Developing skills of investigation and communication (C2)

  • I will be able to investigate the molecular shapes and physical properties of various types of matter.
  • I will be able to demonstrate an understanding of atomic structure and chemical bonding, and how they relate to the physical properties of ionic, molecular, covalent network, and metallic substances.
  • I will be able to investigate the molecular shapes and physical properties of various types of matter.
Understanding the concepts(C3)
  • I will be able to explain the electronic configuration of the various elements in the periodic table.

Success Criteria:

I can...

  • I can use terminology related to the structure and properties of matter
  • I can describe how and why the periodic table is organized into blocks
  • I can describe the characteristics of elements in each of the s-, p-, d- and f-blocks
  • I can predict, draw, and name the 3-D shapes of different molecules using VSEPR theory
  • I can describe molecular shapes in terms of names, structures, and bond angles
  • I can determine the polarity of 3-D molecules based on atom composition and shape
  • I can apply the concept of energy levels, Pauli exclusion principle, Hund’s rule, and the aufbau principle to determine the electron configuration for different elements

Instructions:

  • Download, print and complete this assignment on paper: *1-5H: Atomic Models, Electronic Configuration and VSEPR theory
  • When you are finished, scan your work (all pages) and make a PDF file OR use your phone or digital camera to take pictures and insert them in MS Word using this Step-By-Step Guide
  • Return to this page and submit your completed assignment using the "Add Submission" button located at the bottom of this page.
  • You are required to upload a PDF file. It is highly recommended to use Adobe Reader as screenshots can be uploaded easily.

Basic Submission Procedure:

  1. Pictures must be clear, cropped, and NOT taken on an angle.
  2. Assignment questions should be completed on the assignment sheet itself. Use extra, separate sheets if necessary and clearly label the questions.
  3. When submitting your document, the file should be saved as follows:

Name 1-1D

For example, if Patrick is submitting assignment 1-1D, the file should read: Patrick 1-1D
