SCH4U-25A
2-3J: Properties of Organic Compounds Lab [GTA]
Description
This formative assignment will be assessed by your Grading Teacher in order to provide you with descriptive feedback essential to a future assignment.
Learning Strands & Expectations
-
I am learning how to investigate organic compounds and organic chemical reactions and use various methods to represent the compounds (B2.) (Thinking and Inquiry)
-
I am learning how to demonstrate an understanding of the structure, properties, and chemical behaviour of compounds within each class of organic compounds (B3.) (Knowledge)
-
I am learning how to draw, name and provide the chemical formulas for different classes of organic compounds (B3.1) (Communication)
-
I am learning how to predict describe the similarities and differences in in different classes of organic compounds based upon their melting point, boiling point and solubility in polar and non-polar solvents. (B3.2) (Thinking/Inquiry)
Overview
Task
The properties of a compound are related to its structure and composition. As you go through the lab, try to predict how the properties of compounds within the same class will differ as well as how properties between classes will differ. For example, do you think that a 5- carbon hydrocarbon will have a higher or lower boiling point than a 5-carbon alcohol? How will different classes of organic compounds act in a solvent? Enter the Rosedale Academy Lab below to find out.
Download and print the following handout: 2-3: Properties of Organic Compounds Lab Handout
Enter the lab below and follow the directions provided in both the virtual lab and the handout. Record your observations within the tables provided. You will be required to submit your observations and the answers to the questions in the handout. Click here to jump to the submission page.

Submission Requirements
-
Create a pdf formatted version of your assignment. You can do this by completing one of the following:
-
Using your smartphone or tablet, create a pdf using a scanner app such as "Tiny scanner" or "Scanner App" OR
-
Using a scanner, scan your work (all pages) and create a pdf file OR
-
Use your phone or digital camera to take pictures and insert them in MS Word. Once you have created the word document, SAVE YOUR FILE AS A PDF by selecting "Save As" and select PDF from the drop-down menu.
-
Return to this page and submit your completed assignment using the "Add Submission" button located at the bottom of this page.
-
Your final submission MUST BE IN PDF FORMAT to be graded .
