Assignment Overview
In this assignment, you will respond to a question about rate of reactions and reaction mechanisms using appropriate scientific terminology and course concepts. You will record a 2 minute video response that answers the question asked.
Task
Step 1: Select ONE of the questions below to answer in your video response.
Consider the reaction of nitrogen monoxide with hydrogen gas to form nitrogen gas and water.
2NO (g) + 2H2 (g) ----------> N2(g) + 2H2O(g)
Three elementary steps make up the overall reaction mechanism. The first and the third step proceed relatively quickly as compared to the second step. The steps are shown below:
Step 1 : 2NO ----------> N2O2 ( fast )
Step 2 : N2O2 + H2 ---------> N2O + H2O (slow)
Step 3 : N2O + H2 -----> N2 + H2O (fast)
- Identify the rate-determining step.
- Explain why this step is the rate-determining step.
- Justify your reasoning with the help of an example of any real word event /phenomenon.
- Predict what the activation energy would be for this step, compared to the other 2 steps. Is it higher, the same, or lower? Explain your prediction.
A company is exploring the effect of concentration on the rate of reaction between hydrochloric acid and marble chips. To do this, they run several trials with different concentrations of acid and measure the volume of the carbon dioxide gas produced over the period of time.
2HCl(aq) + CaCO3(s) ---------> CaCl2(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)
- Predict what will happen to the reaction rate as the concentration of acid is increased.
- Explain your prediction based on your knowledge of reaction rates.
- Justify your reasoning with the help of an example of any real word event /phenomenon.
- Predict what the activation energy would be in the sample with higher acid concentration compared to the other concentrations. Is it higher, the same, or lower? Explain your prediction.
Step 2: Answer the Question
- Write down your answers to the questions. Express your answers using the scientific vocabulary from the unit. Refer specifically to course concepts from the unit. NOTE: Your response should be in your own words.
- Organize your oral response into a 1-2 minute script that clearly communicates your answer to your audience. Your response should have a(n):
- Introduction: Introduce yourself and provide a brief summary of the scenario. (e.g., I am going to explain to you the impact of raising temperature on the reaction of hydrochloric acid with magnesium metal.) Do NOT read the entire question (you will run out of time!)
- Body: Answer the questions asked as a presentation.
- Conclusion: Wrap up your presentation with an appropriate concluding sentence that summarizes your ideas.
- Use specific and appropriate vocabulary related to rates of reaction, factors that affect the rate of reaction, and reaction mechanisms to explain your answers. Be specific.
Step 3: Record your response.
- Practice your response until you are comfortable not reading directly from your script.
- Record your presentation. Do not exceed 2 minutes.
- NOTE: Record your presentation in a quiet space. Speak loudly clearly & loudly. Make sure your full face, shoulders, and hands are visible. Do not read directly from your notes.
- Submit your recording as outlined below.
Submission Requirements:
- Your submission must include two files:
Follow the instructions below to record and submit your video:
-
-
Take a minute or two to prepare your answer. Create rough notes if you wish but do not create a script.
-
Find a quiet room to complete your recording. Make sure to speak clearly & loudly.
-
Do not read directly from your notes and try to keep your response approximately two minutes long.
-
Once you are ready to add a submission, make sure you are using Google Chrome. The video response tool will not load on any other browser.
-
You will have 2 options to choose from to upload your video. Refer to THIS MANUAL to understand how to record and upload your video using either option 1 or option 2.
-
Once you have read the manual and are ready to submit your assignment, click on the "Add Submission" button at the bottom of this page.
If your face and shoulders are not visible in the video, then the assignment will be given a zero.
