2-3D: Properties of Organic Compounds Lab

In this exercise you will test the properties of various organic compounds inside the Rosedale Academy Lab. To review proper lab safety procedures, click on the following link and play the Lab Safety Review Game.

Instructions:

  • Download and print the following handout: 2-3:Properties of Organic Compounds Lab Handout
  • Enter the lab below and fill out your observations on the handout. You will be required to submit your observations and the answers to the questions in the handout at the end of this lesson in the evaluation section. Click here to jump to the submission page.
  • Click here to access the lab, if it doesn't load in this page.

The properties of a compound are related to its structure and composition, as you go through the lab try to predict how the properties of compounds within the same class will differ as well as how properties between classes will differ. For example, do you think that a 5 carbon hydrocarbon will have a higher or lower boiling point than a 5 carbon alcohol? How will different classes of organic compounds act in a solvent? Enter the Rosedale Academy Lab below to find out.
