SCH4U – Lesson Plan 3-1

Energy Changes

Lesson Big Idea:

Chemical processes involve many different changes in characteristics and properties.  Chemists are particularly interested in changes in energy that occur during chemical reactions and changes of state.  These changes in energy can be used by scientists to predict reactions and to control their rates.

Ministry Expectations:

D2.1

D3.1

D3.2

Learning Goals:

By the end of this lesson you will:

      • Understand the difference between potential and kinetic energy
      • Be able to differentiate between the system and surroundings in a chemical process
      • Be able to define enthalpy and how it relates to heat absorbed or released during a chemical process
      • Understand the difference between endothermic and exothermic processes

Success Criteria:

I know I have achieved the learning goals when I can explain the different between chemical and potential energy, define enthalpy and identify chemical processes based on whether they absorb energy from or release energy into their surroundings.
