SCH4U – Lesson Plan 3-4

Rates of Reaction

Lesson Big Idea:

There are several different ways to quantify a chemical reaction, including the concentration of products or reactants, the percent ionization of ionic compounds to the change in enthalpy (H).  One other important way to quantify a chemical reaction is to measure the speed at which it occurs.  This is what is known as the rate of reaction.  Typically the rate of a chemical reaction is measured as a change in concentration in either the reactants or the products over time.  In this lesson you will learn about the basics of rates of reaction, how they are measured and factors that influence the rate of a reaction.

Ministry Expectations:

D3.6

D3.7

D2.8

Learning Goals

By the end of this lesson you will:

      • Be able to describe what rate of reaction means
      • Explain collision theory in the context of chemical reactions
      • Explain how different factors, including temperature, concentration, pressure and catalysts affect the rate of a reaction
      • Understand how the rate limiting step affects the rate of a reaction

Success Criteria

I know I have achieved the goals of this lesson when I can define rate of reaction, explain collision theory and how it can be applied to understand the changes in rates of reaction when different variables are adjusted.
