SCH4U – Lesson Plan 2-2
Lesson Big Idea:
There are over 1,000,000 different organic compounds that chemists know of and because of the sheer number of these, chemists have developed a systematic method of naming and drawing these different compounds to reflect the important elements and structures within them. This lesson will introduce you to the methods and techniques for naming and drawing these compounds according to IUPAC convention for each class of organic compound.
Learning Goals:
By the end of this lesson you will:
-
-
- Know the different classes of organic compounds and their structural characteristics
- Describe organic compounds using molecular formulas, structural formulas and line-angle formulas
- Be able to name organic compounds according to IUPAC convention by interpreting their structural formula
- Be able to draw organic compounds based on their IUPAC names
-
Success Criteria:
I know I have achieved the learning goals when I can name and draw molecules from the different classes of organic compounds.
Ministry Expectations:
