SCH4U – Lesson Plan 4-2

Lesson Big Idea:

Chemical reactions are dynamic events, occurring both forwards and backwards until a balancing point is reached.  This balancing point is called equilibrium and is affected by different factors including concentration and the equilibirum constant.  Equilibrium constants can provide important information about the nature of specific reactions, and can help chemists predict which reactions will occur spontaneously, and how a reaction will respond to changes in the conditions of its system and surroundings.

Learning Goals:

  • Explore the factors that contribute to equilibrium constant for different reactions.
  • Investigate equilibrium constants for common chemical reactions.

Success Criteria:

I know I have achieved the goals for this lesson when I can define what an equilibrium constant is, the factors that determine the value of equilibrium constants and can describe  equilibrium constants for different common reactions.
