SCH4U – Lesson Plan 5-2
Lesson Big Idea:
Redox reactions involve the transfer of electrons between species during a chemical reaction. In transforming from products to reactants the numbers of electrons lost, must equal the number of electrons gained. To ensure that the number of electrons gained is equal to the number lost, we must balance redox reaction equations accordingly. In this lesson you will learn how to balance redox reactions using two different methods: the oxidation number method and the half-reaction method.
Learning Goals:
- Discover techniques to balance redox reactions including the oxidation numbers method and the half-reaction method.
- Explore techniques for balancing redox reactions that occur in acidic and basic solutions
Success Criteria:
I know I have achieved the goals for this lesson when I can:
-
-
- Describe how to balance redox reactions using the oxidation numbers method
- Balance redox reactions using the oxidation numbers method in, neutral, acidic and basic solutions
- Describe how to balance redox reactions using the half-reaction method
- Balance redox reactions using the half-reaction method in neutral, acidic and basic solutions
