SCH4U – Lesson Plan 5-4
Lesson Big Idea:
Electrochemistry is an incredibly important field of chemistry that has allowed for many modern conveniences. The batteries that we use in everything from flashlights to cellphones to cars use the the principles of electrochemistry to allow us to see in the dark, communicate from anywhere and move rapidly across our environment. However, there is an environmental cost to this convenience in the form of toxic pollution. In this lesson you will perform research to discover what some of these negative effects are and how we can act to reduce this burden on our planet.
Learning Goals:
- Explore commercial uses of electrochemistry.
- Investigate techniques and technologies that can be used to help reduce the negative environmental effects of electrochemical products.
- Understand different ways that chemistry can help and harm humanity and the environment.
Success Criteria
I know I have achieved the goals for this lesson when I can:
-
-
- Describe commercial uses of technology that use electrochemical principles.
- Identify some of the the dangers to the environment and our bodies of products that use electrochemistry.
- Explain ways that we can reduce the negative environmental effects of toxic pollution caused by electrochemical products.
