Description
Welcome to lesson 1-3: Blocks of the Periodic Table. As you may recall from previous chemistry courses, the periodic table is organized according to several different qualities including: atomic number, atomic mass, valence electrons and other characteristics. This lesson introduces the concept of blocks in the periodic table and will explore the relationship between an element's location in the periodic table, its electron configuration and its properties.
Learning Goals:
By the end of this lesson you will:
-
-
- Explain the link between electron configuration and the properties of atomic elements.
- Explain how the organization of elements in the periodic table are related to the structures of the elements within those blocks.
-
Success Criteria:
I know I have achieved the learning goals when I can describe how and why the periodic table is organized into blocks and describe the characteristics of elements in each of the s-, p-, d- and f-blocks.
