Description

Welcome to lesson 2-1 the unit on Organic Chemistry. Organic chemistry is the study of all carbon containing compounds (with a few exceptions). These compounds play an important role in our everday life from everything to fueling our cars and powerplants to providing the genetic code that makes up our DNA. This lesson introduces the different ways that organic compounds can be represented in formula and diagram form. The lesson also introduces the many classes of organic compounds and finishes with an explanation of two different types of isomerism that we find in organic compounds.

Learning Goals:

By the end of this lesson you will:

      • Understand how the different classes of organic compounds differ from each other.
      • Know how to represent organic compounds in various formats from molecular structures to line-angle diagrams.
      • Understand the concept of isomerism.

Success Criteria:

I know I have achieved the learning goals when I can describe the different classes of organic compounds, understand the different formulaic and structural methods to represent them. As well as explain the concept of isomerism.
