Empowering Future Global Leaders:

Highlights of Rosedale Global High School’s Winter Camp in Hong Kong

Rosedale Global High School partnered with the University of Hong Kong (HKU) for a dynamic Winter Camp titled “Global Leadership: Design Thinking and Social Innovation.” This transformative program provided students the unique opportunity to explore global leadership, design thinking, and social innovation, while fostering intercultural exchange and academic enrichment.

During the week-long camp, students engaged in 15 hours of academic lectures led by the University of Hong Kong professors. The sessions, conducted in English, delved into topics such as design thinking methodologies and social innovation principles. Through interactive discussions and activities, students honed their analytical and creative skills.

A highlight of the program was a 20-minute presentation where students identified organizations exemplifying social innovation and presented case studies to staff and professors at the University of Hong Kong, showcasing their ability to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios.

Beyond academics, students explored the region of Hong Kong and its post-secondary landscape, visiting five leading universities. Workshops and campus tours provided insights into various disciplines and career paths, igniting aspirations for international education.

Complementing academic pursuits were socio-cultural activities, including city tours and iconic experiences such as riding the Ding Ding (Hong Kong Tramways) and boat tours.

The Winter Camp underscored the necessity of global academic experiences in both shaping informed global citizens, and preparing for a clear transition from high school to higher education. It equipped participants with the tools and mindset needed to thrive in an interconnected world, empowering them to drive positive change.

As students return home, they carry with them newfound knowledge, skills, and a deeper appreciation of diversity. The Winter Camp exemplified the transformative potential of international collaboration and experiential learning, while preparing them to make meaningful contributions to their communities through problem solving, and empowering their growth to become the next generation of global leaders.

Travel Diary|What is it like to study at the University of Hong Kong?

The Hong Kong Winter Camp of the 2024 Global Leadership Program, jointly organized by HKU and Rosedale Global High School, has come to a successful conclusion. What are the highlights of this program? What did the students gain? Let’s take a look:

DAY 1: Course + HKU Campus Visit

After the opening ceremony in the morning, Dr. Vivian Chu, Deputy Director of the Master of Social Sciences Program at HKU, presented the first course on global leadership.

Students received a welcome luncheon hosted by HKU and were guided by HKU Student Ambassadors on a campus tour; in the evening, they jointly explored the city of Hong Kong.

DAY 2: Course + Team Building Activities

Three hours of engaging discussion occurred in the morning with a lecture on how to play a leadership role in a world where knowledge economy, globalization, and regional dynamics are constantly changing. Today’s presenter is Dr. Michael Luk, Honorary Associate Professor at HKU.

In the afternoon, the students were excited about the team activity—Dialogue in the Dark. Trying out various activities in the dark space of the Experience Center, they were able to build trust, “see” more, and discover differences in the world.

DAY 3: Course + Dream University Campus Visits

The theme of the third course was Design Thinking and Innovation, with Joe Chui, Global Head of Customer Relationship Management Solutions from MCM Worldwide. He led the students through a lively and practical class, allowing them to experience first-hand how enterprises can solve practical problems through design thinking.

The afternoon was led by Rosedale Global High School teachers, and students visited two of their dream universities—The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Students exchanged questions and answers with teachers from the Admissions Offices of each university, and visited the PolyU AIR Lab filled with science and technology, the main library in CUHK as well as other campus landmarks.

DAY 4: Unleashed Creativity + Dream University Campus Visits

The theme of today’s lecture continues to be design thinking and innovation. Students learned to apply what their foundation education in these themes, engaged to explore-conceptualize-output, and started practical exercises in small groups to apply key methodologies for solving practical problems.

In the afternoon, we continued campus visit to these two destinations: The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and City University of Hong Kong (CityU). Rosedale Global High School students have now successfully visited Hong Kong’s top five universities!

DAY 5: Closing Ceremony

In the last day of the program, Joseph Chan, Associate Professor of Practice and Associate Director of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, HKU SPACE, combined global leadership with design thinking, and brought a wonderful course summary to the students.
In the afternoon, students delivered group presentations in formal attire, demonstrated their capability to turn knowledge into practice, shared what their learnings over the five-day course, and received certificates of completion at the closing ceremony.

PAREF Southcrest School is our first Rosedale Global High School partner school in the Philippines, and we are proud to work with them alongside PAREF (Parents for Education Foundation) Education Group. PAREF Southcrest School is one of sixteen schools within the PAREF Education Group, a non-profit aimed at providing holistic education by combining high academic standards and character formation and has graduated more than 8,000 students in its four-decade-long history.

This partnership reflects our ongoing commitment to connecting learners with real-world application and innovation in a forward-thinking, rigorous, and collaborative education environment. We’re proud to support PAREF Southcrest School with our differentiated learning solution that offers choice in how students learn, develop competencies, and demonstrate their achievements, and look forward to seeing these students realize their full potential,” says Michelle Cui, Founder and CEO of Rosedale International Education.

Visaya, Executive Director, PAREF Southcrest School.

Daniel Moran, Chairman of PAREF Education Group says “Academic excellence is a key pillar in the PAREF mission. I would like to congratulate PAREF Southcrest leadership for this wonderful initiative of offering a Canadian international curriculum in the Philippines which can benefit our students and facilitate their academic success. This partnership of PAREF with Rosedale Global High School in offering a dual PAREF-OSSD diploma will help improve our academic standards by making them truly world-class, and provide opportunities for our PAREF students and faculty. Exposing PAREF to the global network of OSSD will be very motivational and bring confidence to our students and teachers.
